Rather Not Rather Says

Key issues on backburner

Corporate news star Dan Rather admitted in an interview with Matthew Engel for The Guardian that the surge of patriotism after 9-11 resulted in journalists failing to ask the tough questions. Rather stated, "It starts with a feeling of patriotism within oneself. I know the right question, but you know what? This is not exactly the right time to ask it."

We were all shocked after 9-11. That same shock pushed our corporate media to refuse to investigate serious issues. The media choses to do be "patriotic" and propagandize the public on behalf of those in power and the Pentagon.

The corporate media as well as the local outlets are interlocked and dependent on government sources for news content. Gone are the days of deep investigative reporting teams challenging the powerful. Media consolidation has downsized newsrooms to the point where reporters serve more as stenographers than researchers.

If the free marketplace can rumble to the rescue, hundreds of independent news sources are to evolve and emerge. Independent newspapers, magazines, websites, radio and TV are becoming more widely available. Labeled by the corporate as having "questionable reliability", emerging news sources are building their own audiences worldwide.

CLOH.Org, a Media Darling Proving Ground

Efforts here are rather bold. This new community institution is needed so as to pick up the fumbled duties and responsibilities of professional journalists.

The Op-Ed part of CLOH.Org makes a fine place to make a stand and share ideas that are NOT being considered elsewhere, sadly.
